A 40 year old Japanese maple died during a time of construction on my home while my romantic relationships was ending. Two years later, the dead tree still stood in the backyard. I cut the tree down and dried it for two years as the relationship made tiny, potent steps towards repair and renewal. The tree was transformed into an 18 foot long prayer bead mala. To prevent further cracking of the beads, sterling silver butterflies, symbols of hope, transformation, freedom and rebirth were added.

The mala signifies the metamorphosis of the tree, asking the question, is this the end of the tree or the beginning of new life? The prayer mala is a hopeful reminder that all relationships – personal, societal and those related to the climate and our precious planet, can be repaired and renewed through prayers for new perspectives along with first steps, conscious effort and desire for healing.
