On Tuesday, October 8 at 7pm, Catharine Clark Gallery, working in conjunction with the University of California San Francisco’s Orlo H. Clark Lectureship, will host a special ticketed lecture delivered by Brian Dolan PhD, Professor and Chair in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at UCSF. The talk will be held at the gallery (248 Utah Street, San Francisco). Suggested donation: $5 (no one turned away for lack of funds).
Annually, the Orlo H. Clark Lectureship invites a speaker to deliver a lecture in honor of Dr. Orlo H. Clark (1941 -2022). Physicians and medical faculty at UCSF attend the talk at 7 am at the Parnassus campus. In 2023, in an effort to expand access to the talk, Catharine Clark Gallery began hosting the speaker at 7 pm at the gallery on the evening before the lecture at the university. Past speakers have included prominent scientists, physicians, and artists whose research, interests, and work explore the intersections between science, medicine, and the arts.
On the subject of art and science, Professor Dolan has said: "Art and medicine are kindred spirits, each a blend of science and intuition, seeking to understand the human condition. Where medicine heals the body, art heals the soul, together enriching the tapestry of human experience". Dolan worked with Dr. Clark and shepherded into print Dr. Clark's book "The Remarkables: Endocrine Abnormalities in Art," co-authored by Carol Z. Clark through the University of California Health Humanities Press. "The Remarkables" explores visual evidence of endocrine disease in art throughout history.
Brian Dolan is Professor and Chair of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at UCSF and the managing editor of the University of California Health Humanities Press. He received his PhD in History and Philosophy of Science from Cambridge University and throughout his 30-year career has published on an array of topics including industrialization and population health, the development of medical technologies, Medicare and Medicaid fraud, and most recently an introductory textbook on American healthcare costs. Dolan's talk will provide some background on how Carol and Orlo Clark's book "The Remarkables" came to be published with the UC Health Humanities Press and how it relates to his research interests in the history of scientific printing, particularly involving technologies of color printing.
All ticket proceeds ($5 each) will benefit UCSF's Orlo H. Clark Lectureship Fund. No one will be turned away for lack of funds and seating is limited to 50 people. Please RSVP either through the link below or via email exit@cclarkgallery.com
