For generations of physicians, Frank Netter’s illustrations have been the first window into the human body. Trained as both an artist and a surgeon, Netter produced thousands of images that shaped how medicine is taught and understood around the world. In this year’s Orlo H. Clark Lectureship, Dr. Wen Shen explores Netter’s remarkable career and the enduring place where art and medicine meet.

Dr. Shen is an endocrine surgeon specializing in disorders of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands. Since completing his surgical training in 2007, he has built a practice centered on collaborative, multidisciplinary, patient-centered care. He has held numerous leadership roles in the field, serving as executive councilor and vice president of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons and as a member of the American College of Surgeons Board of Governors. He was also one of the lead authors of the AAES Guidelines for the Surgical Management of Thyroid Disease in Adults, which set evidence-based standards for thyroid surgery worldwide.
Alongside his clinical work, Dr. Shen holds a master’s degree in the history of medicine and has researched and presented widely on medical and surgical history. He is deeply committed to teaching and mentoring students, residents, and fellows, making him an ideal guide to the life and legacy of one of medicine’s most influential artists.
