Opening reception for exhibition and 90th birthday celebration for Masami Teraoka: Saturday, January 10 from 3 - 5pm (please note the updated time)

Catharine Clark Gallery is pleased open its 2026 exhibition program with Masami Teraoka: From Here to Eternity, Five Decades of Art Making. This major survey exhibition, mounted in celebration of the acclaimed artist’s 90th birthday, encompasses both the North and South galleries. Complementing the survey, the gallery presents a Media Room exhibition featuring a collaborative video work by Ken Goldberg and Tiffany Shlain.

These presentations inaugurate a year of programming celebrating Catharine Clark Gallery’s 35th anniversary and BOXBLUR’s 10th anniversary. The gallery also celebrates its recent designation as a Legacy Business in San Francisco, an honor bestowed on small businesses operating for over 30 years that have made significant contributions to the city’s economic and civic life.

Masami Teraoka: From Here to Eternity

Masami Teraoka (b. 1936) creates work that integrates reality with the surreal, humor with social commentary, and the historical with the contemporary. While sexuality is a recurring subject in his work, his representation of intimacy shifted from positive depictions of free love in the 1970s to a profound concern for the spread of HIV in the mid-1980s. This survey tracks that evolution, offering a rare opportunity to see watercolors, drawings, and multiples from Teraoka’s "AIDS Series" and "Waves Series" in conversation with projects ranging from 1974 to the present day.
