Since the opening of the Catharine Clark Gallery as an alternative exhibition space in 1991, the curatorial emphasis has been on work that pushed the boundaries of conventional art-making. Video, Sound art, and art devised with experimental technologies have been central to the gallery's program. Pioneering the presentation of new media art in San Francisco, the gallery is the first commercial gallery in the area with a dedicated Media Room. Featured artists have included such established figures as William Kentridge, Kutlug Ataman, and Ann Hamilton. More recently Erin Cosgrove, John Slepian, Anthony Discenza, Ken Goldberg, Jeremy Blake, Kate Gilmore, and Adam Chapman have presented projects.
