Catharine Clark Gallery presents Julie Heffernan: Nature Morte, an exhibition of new paintings by the Brooklyn-based artist. The exhibition is on view November 14, 2026 – January 2, 2027 in the South Gallery, alongside Stacey Steers: The Stars Watch from Long Ago in the North Gallery, with an opening reception for both exhibitions on Saturday, November 14 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM.
In Nature Morte (the French term for still life, "dead nature"), she turns to a world on fire. Her new oil paintings depict scenes of contemporary destruction: wildfires in Los Angeles; explosions and bombings in Iran, Gaza, and Venezuela; a Ukrainian drone strike on the Tuapse oil refinery; and a tropical island in flames. Heffernan places these present-day catastrophes within the language of art history.
Heffernan received her BFA from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and her MFA from the Yale School of Art. She is a member of the National Academy of Design and a Professor of Fine Arts at Montclair State University, and her work is held in over 25 museum and institutional collections. She has been represented by Catharine Clark Gallery since 2005.
