Catharine Clark Gallery returns to EXPO Chicago with a presentation of work by acclaimed interdisciplinary artist Deborah Oropallo (b. 1954) at Stand 302. Oropallo incorporates mixed media techniques, including photomontage, video, computer editing, printmaking, and painting into her practice. Whether still or moving images, the resulting works bear traces of the distortions and artifact that evolve or remain from the image manipulation. Her composite works layer visual sources, producing a dense interplay between time, place, form, and content.
Our presentation features key major paintings from Oropallo's early career (1993 - 1997) as well as several major video works produced in collaboration with Andy Rappaport and Jeremiah Franklin (2008 – ongoing). The booth also features recent sculptures and mixed media work from American Gothic, Oropallo's collaborative series realized with her partner Michael Goldin. Incorporating animal hides, trees, bones, buckets, and boots, the resulting sculptures are exquisitely crafted and possess a darkly absurdist quality, exploring the tensions between the farmer and the farmed, predators and prey, abundance, and scarcity.
In conjunction with its Main Sector presentation, the gallery announces its participation in IN/SITU, a special fair program for major installation works at the Navy Pier. The gallery presents “REBELLION” (2021), a multi-channel video by Deborah Oropallo and Andy Rappaport which was most recently featured in Oropallo’s traveling museum survey exhibition “Moving Pictures,” on view at the di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art and the Schneider Museum of Art. IN/SITU is curated by Jessica Hong, Chief Curator of the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art.
