Art for everyone!

EXiT opened in the spring of 2023 with the expansion of the Catharine Clark Gallery. An independent bookstore and lounge with a focus on art and artists, EXiT carries original and distinctive artworks, prints, catalogues, publications, art objects, and artist books made available to us through partnerships and collaborations with artists and art organizations.

The store offers a unique platform for unexpected combinations and thought-provoking discussions that may not be as comfortably experienced in a traditional gallery setting. On view are artworks priced from $5.50 to $5,500 to ensure accessibility for those interested in acquiring unique works of art and original multiples.

EXiT is an intimate space with a publication room, a main gallery, and a lounge. Driven by the desire to cultivate a comfortable environment for nurturing community and creative conversation EXiT hosts book signings, panel discussions, and readings.

We collaborate with publishers and organizations such as Arion Press, Crow's Shadow Institute of the Arts, Mullowney Printing, Open Editions, Letterform Archive, and Radius Books. Our collection features a range of artist books from Arion Press such as The Lulu Plays and Porgy & Bess, which are accompanied by original multiples authored by William Kentridge and Kara Walker. Additionally, we offer titles from Radius Books such as Bíilukaa a monograph on the contemporary Native artist, Wendy Red Star, The Enigma of Belonging by American artist Binh Danh, and Sense about the art of Ann Hamilton. The shop also carries witty conceptual works by Lenka Clayton, Phillip Andrew Lewis, Nina Katchadourian, and Malia Jensen, as well as refined and hand-crafted paper sculptures by Imin Yeh. EXiT is a great place to find distinctive and handmade gifts, whether artist-designed blankets, jewelry, letterpress cards, or books.

EXiT is conveniently located near prominent arts venues such as California College of the Arts (CCA), CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, the Museum of Craft and Design, Minnesota Street Project, and several contemporary fine art galleries including CULT (Aimee Friberg) and Hosfelt Gallery. You can find us at 248 Utah Street, San Francisco, Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00AM - 6:00PM.
